Chapel & York - International fundraising

Did you know that Beethoven's 9th Symphony was originally commissioned by the Philharmonic Society of London? At that time, the German composer was complaining that Vienna didn't like his music anymore, Italian music becoming increasingly popular. He looked successfully for recognition and financial support abroad.

We were very pleased to have you with us for this lunch with Chapel & York.

As a thank you note, we invite you to immerse yourself in the work of artists who couldn't have achieved success without international financial support.

From Mozart's Don Giovanni - a commission from the Prague Opera House - to Messiaen's Turangalîla-Symphonie, commissionned by the Boston Symphony Orchestra, a vast portion of the classical repertoire would have never seen the light of day, were it not for the generous support of international patrons and commissioners. Some pieces were named after their patrons, such as Beethoven's "Archduke" trio, named after the Archiduke Rudolf of Vienna, himself a student of Beethoven! Along our journey, we will also explore the infamous relationship between Wagner and Ludwig II, prince of Bavaria, popularised by Visconti's renown movie Ludwig. We will also discover what true friends, who mutually admire each other, can do: the Italian violonist Paganini gracefully supported his French friend and composer Hector Berlioz, as he wrote Harold in Italy one of his most famous pieces today... These are many examples of the remarkable accomplishments from international artistic cooperation.
