This playlist is a tribute to innovative classical music artists featuring Ravel, Mozart, Wagner, Stravinsky, and so many more who went against the grain and took their art to the next level. Discover them now!
We begin with the great Richard Wagner. In the prelude of Tristan and Isolde, you'll hear a chord, dubbed ‘the Tristan chord’ that has been much debated by musicologists for its elusive quality. Is it ominous, joyful or painful? Some have interpreted this enigmatic chord as the beginning of harmonic liberation that would later become the foundation of contemporary music.
Your musical journey continues with Igor Stravinsky and his iconic Rite of Spring, that later became recognized as one of the most groundbreaking works of its time. Rather than developing musical themes, Stravinsky used his symphony orchestra as a massive percussion instrument in this almost anti-symphonic ballet. Listen to the organic rhythmic pattern created by the strings, echoing the tribal accents of traditional rites. You won't hear anything like it in a Beethoven symphony!
Let’s take a deeper dive into Maurice Ravel's captivating and moving composition, the Symphonic Waltz. The outbreak of World War I in 1914 had a profound impact on Ravel, causing him to experience trauma and perhaps leading him to take a more radical artistic approach. As a result, the joyful and light-hearted opening of the Waltz gradually gives way to an overwhelming whirlwind of sounds and images, building into an uncontrollable storm.
Eventually, Mozart's The Marriage of Figaro, in addition to its remarkable musicality, serves as a true plea for democratic revolution in a deeply traditionalist Austria.
